Helpful Tips for a Trouble-Free Installation

The following information is a checklist of items to prepare your home for your new flooring. Proper preparation helps the installation go smoothly and efficiently. This information sheet is to prevent surprises that cause unhappy customers. Please read carefully.

Preparation For Installation

Before installation, determine who will be doing the removal of the old floor covering. For an additional charge we can provide this service. [NOTE: If you wish to reuse carpet, please make sure to let us know this before arrival, or we may cut up the old carpet into manageable strips customary for disposal.]

It is recommended that the customer do this prior to our arrival. It will save you some money and give you the opportunity to check the condition of the sub floor, repair any damage, fix floor squeaks and clean them thoroughly. Any floor repairs we do will be subject to charge (see unforeseen charges below).

Please empty all closets (clothing, shoes, boxes, etc. we need 4 ft. from the floor up); remove all items from underneath beds, remove bed coverings, fragile lamps, knickknacks, glassware from china cabinets, drawers from dressers, and books from bookcases, any small furniture you can move and pictures on the walls. Disconnect all computers, stereos, TVs VCR equipment, or any other electrical equipment and remove from installation area. Pianos and organs are sensitive musical instruments and should be moved by a qualified piano mover. We ask that the customer remove as much from the installation area as possible.

We installers would rather spend more time installing your new flooring than moving furniture. However, for an additional charge we will move larger furniture. Please note that we will use great care in moving your furniture. The installer has the right to refuse to move any furniture that he deems sensitive or of high quality. Furniture is removed at customers risk. Normal installation and removal methods may slight scuff existing baseboards or walls. We will use extreme care to minimize this. Expect minor touch up painting to be needed after installation.

Please inform me of any wires located under the carpet, such as alarm wires or system. Check for cable wore connections under existing floor covering (cable company may have to remove or disconnect). Before the installers arrive, complete other remodeling projects intended in the room, such as painting and wallpapering. Vacuum the old carpet to avoid the possibility of airborne dust, dirt and pet dander. After the carpet and cushion are removed, vacuum the sub-floor.

Please note: in most cases we will not remove old carpet from the job site. Everything will be cut and bound for garbage pick up and placed where ever customer requests. You may need to call for a special pick up.

Crew Arrival

Vehicles in the driveway should be parked in the street. The crew will obviously need safe and ready access to the areas to be covered. Safe meaning snow shoveled off sidewalks and steps, no dogs, cats or other pets and no small children under foot. Window treatments such as curtains should be hung up off of the floor and blinds opened up for sufficient light. Generally things that may interfere with the work should be dealt with or discussed with the crew before arrival.

During Installation

Upon delivery, inspect the new material for proper color, texture, and style, before it is installed. New, thicker carpet may prevent doors from swinging clear and free. We will remove the doors and re-hang them if possible. If the doors do not clear, arrange to have them trimmed. For an additional charge we can arrange to trim your doors. Doors, moldings and furniture are removed at customers risk.

It is your responsibility during installation to provide an adequate supply of fresh air, as with other renovation projects. Make sure that adequate power; light, ventilation, heat and water will be available 24 hours before, and during, the installation. Toilets are nice too. (This could be a concern on new home construction or an unoccupied structure). During the cold seasons heat is a must!

Excessive Furniture

Additional charges may apply to areas with excessive amounts of furniture (i.e., file cabinets, heavy equipment, storage boxes, wall units, sleeper sofas, four-poster beds, armories, etc.) We do not move bed coverings, antiques, grandfather clocks, aquariums, waterbeds, pianos, safes, computers, or audio and video equipment of any kind. (Many of these items need to be professionally moved.) Your crew can move appliances (i.e., stove and refrigerators) for an additional charge but please note that the customer is responsible for gas and water lines. If your crew disconnects and reconnects either gas or water lines you will be asked to sign a release.

Seams

Seams are where two different pieces of material come together and form one piece. WE CANNOT GUARANTEE INVISIBLE SEAMS. A slightly visible seam does NOT mean you got a bad installation.

Seams will be less noticeable with different types of carpet and vinyl patterns. We take great care seam placement and trying to eliminate seams. Feel free to ask any questions on seam placement. Seams should run: the length of the area, Main Traffic runs parallel to rather than across a seam and natural light does not strike across the seam. If you choose to have fewer seams, this may increase the amount of carpet/vinyl you need, but will add satisfaction and professionalism to the job.

Secured Premises (Condominiums and apartments)

Please check with your building management for parking accessibility and delivery times for your installation (such as, elevators, service entrances, front desk procedures, etc.)

We require ready access- meaning someone at the work site when the crew gets there, (or a key provided a day ahead of time); no obstructions in the way of getting the 12' to 15' carpet goods as well as tools into the work area; access to where the old carpet and pad is to be placed for removal, (or reuse).

Unforeseen and Additional Charges

Additional charges may apply to installations when the take-up and removal of carpet or flooring are done. Water damage, urine soaked carpets, floors with structural damage, asbestos floors, etc., are not always detectable until the installation process has begun. If possibility, please advise the salesman in advance. Other additional charges include the following: cutting out or working around excessive shelves or closet organizers, moving pool tables, installing used carpet, shimming to raise carpet to a higher surface, trimming doors, running speaker wires under carpet (no electrical or extension cords will be covered), installer providing power, removing materials from the job site. All additional charges will be determined by time and materials involved. If you are concerned, please ask for an approximate price at time of sale. We are not responsible for removal or damage to closet shelving or organizers.

Cleanup

We will make a post-installation inspection with you to guarantee your complete satisfaction. After the installation we will pick up all scrap materials. Surplus materials will be placed on your premises, where you request. Please remember that normal installation and removal methods may slight scuff existing baseboards or walls. Touch up may be required.

After Installation

Vacuum your carpet after installation to remove loose fibers. Some carpets will shed more than others. This is normal. Be sure to check and change the vacuum bag when necessary. You may notice a slight new carpet smell, which should dissipate quickly. Ventilate the area for 48 to 72 hours. If you are unusually sensitive to odors or allergy prone, you may want to avoid the installation area during this period. If you have any questions contact me. Please refer to the "after care" page on this web site for maintenance and cleaning procedures.
